MTN Nigeria shuts down outlets, service centers "until further notice"

The Nigeria division of South African telecoms company, MTN, has announced that it is closing shop until further notice, following reprisal attacks targeting its offices and facilities in Nigeria by irate and opportunistic locals.

The retaliatory attacks on a host of South African businesses in Nigeria arrive on the heels of persistent xenophobia attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa.

The latest attacks in South Africa led to the torching and looting of over 50 shops--most of whom belonged to Nigerians.

“Over the last day, our facilities, customers and some of our stakeholders have been the subject of attacks in retaliation for the ongoing xenophobia situation in South Africa. We have confirmed reports of attacks in Lagos, Ibadan and Uyo.
“MTN condemns any acts of violence, prejudice and xenophobia and remains absolutely committed to ensuring a peaceful, harmonious and respectful relationship with all communities in Nigeria and across Africa.
“We are engaging all relevant authorities in this regard and urge them to act swiftly to reduce tensions both in South Africa and Nigeria. We will provide further updates as and when possible”,

the statement from the telecom company read.

Shops belonging to the South African chain, Shoprite, have also been looted in the past 48hours by Nigerians.

There are about 120 South African businesses in Nigeria, with a market worth of about N6trillion.

MTN Nigeria also accounts for a third of the core profit of the parent South African firm.

Over 1,400 killed by bandits in seven months — Nigerian Govt

The Federal Government on Thursday said that about 330 attacks by bandits and 1,460 deaths were recorded within the last seven months in the country.

The Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Amina Shamaki, made this known at the opening of Federal and States Security Administrators’ meeting in Birnin Kebbi.

The permanent secretary, however, said the attacks have been on the decline.

She noted that the North West which was one of the most peaceful zones of the country, had in the last few years, witnessed attacks by bandits.

Ms Shamaki said the security situation in the zone remained a source of concern to the security agencies and the general populace.
“From January to July, 2019, about 330 attacks were recorded, resulting to the death of about 1,460 civilians.

“However, between June and July, 2019, the number of incidents declined, especially in Zamfara State, that had been the epicentre of armed banditry, ” she said.

Ms Shamaki also attributed the decline to the combination of both kinetic and non-kinetic measures put in place by the government.

“The dialogue initiated by the current Zamfara state governor, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, in particular, and the other governors in the zone is worthy of commendation and should be adopted by states with similar security challenges.

“Application of the carrot and stick approach is an effective strategy that enables criminals wiling to embrace peace to do so while repentant ones are identified and isolated for appropriate actions by the security agencies,” she said.
According to her, while bandits’ attacks have reduced in Zamfara, the incidents have risen in the contiguous States.

Ms Shamaki, therefore, stressed the need for vigilance and close monitoring of the repentant bandits by the security agencies to prevent them from going back to the trenches.

“Another security concern is the porosity of our borders; the borders aided smuggling of Small Arms and Light Weapons from war-torn zones, including Libya and Central Africa Republic, terrorism, cross- border crimes, human trafficking, irregular migration and smuggling of migrants, among others.

”The Federal Government is doing a lot to improve border security with a view to addressing some of these challenges.”

The permanent secretary appealed to States that share borders with the country’s neighbours to support the government ‘s efforts by enlightening their subjects on the implication of harbouring irregular migrants and other aliens in their midst.

In his remarks, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi thanked the security agencies and judiciary in the state for contributing to make the state peaceful and model for other states.

“It doesn’t matter if one state is peaceful while others are not, we should collapse the Silos that divide us, embrace and understand each other in order to help ourselves in the provision of security in this country,” he urged.

The governor wished all participants fruitful deliberations and memorable stay in the peaceful state.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the few Nigerians abroad indulging in criminal activities do not represent the values of majority of the people of the country.

The meeting was on the sidelines of the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7), on Thursday in Yokohama, Japan.

The president said: "Let me also say that there are few Nigerians in the Diaspora that are giving us a bad name by engaging in criminal activities. These Nigerians are a minority, they do not represent the values of our country, and I plead with them to change their ways. We will not condone any crime whether at home or abroad, and we will also not allow these Nigerians define us as a people with a reputation for criminality."

Tribunal sacks Dino Melaye as Kogi west senator

The Kogi state national assembly/state assembly election tribunal has sacked Dino Melaye as the senator representing Kogi west district.

In a judgement delivered on Friday, the tribunal led by A.O. Chijiok ordered a fresh election in the district.

Smart Adeyemi, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 26 election, had approached the tribunal and challenged Melaye’s victory on the grounds that there were cases of irregularities including over-voting and non-compliance with the electoral act.

“We’ve decided to fight the results of the elections in the tribunal court because constitutional injustices must not be allowed to stand,” Adeyemi who was the Kogi west senator between 2007 and 2015 said in an April 17 tweet.

We’ve decided to fight the results of the elections in the tribunal court because constitutional injustices must not be allowed to stand.
Melaye has reacted to the ruling saying there would have been a fresh election in the axis since he was assured of winning the gubernatorial election scheduled to hold later in the year.

“On Tribunal judgement. No cause 4 alarm at all. Even if it went my way they will still go to the Appeal Court. Our mandate can not be taken. We will get judgment at the Appeal Court. There will be a fresh election in Kogi West bc I will be Governor. For my Senate mandate no shaking,” Melaye tweeted in reaction to the judgement.
